A new extra-curricular programme has recently been launched at the Klabb 3-16 centres of Zabbar B and Mosta, thanks the support of ๐๐๐ง๐ค ๐จ๐ ๐๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐๐ญ๐ญ๐ ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐. Based on the concept of ๐๐๐ฑ๐ญ๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ฌ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ข๐ง๐๐๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ, the programme teaches the life-skill of sewing, and was devised by two teachers of the VET subject Fashion and Textiles, ๐๐ฌ ๐๐จ๐ง๐ข๐๐ ๐
๐๐ซ๐ซ๐ฎ๐ ๐ข๐ and ๐๐ฌ ๐๐ข๐ฆ๐จ๐ง๐ ๐๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐.
The programme is giving the students the occasion to use resources associated with the art of sewing, such as sewing machines, fabric shears, rotary cutters, measuring tapes, tailorsโ chalk, and different fabrics with different textures. However, it is also an opportunity for them to develop their creative skills, help build confidence, and instill a sense of pride in their finished creations.
They are also being encouraged to solve problems, think logically, and get an insight into design, as they learn about measurements, placement, and function.
Another learning outcome of the programme is that the students are learning more about sustainable fashion, and the impact of textile production on the environment. The fabric pieces being used are offcuts which rather than going to waste, are being used to teach the students about upcycling and repurposing old fabric into something new.
A special thanks to BIBAS, Big Ben Interiors, and B4 Textiles, for providing the materials for this programme.
